Charles Perrault’s timeless tale, ‘La belle au bois dormant’, or ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, has enchanted many a child and adult alike around the globe for centuries.
When princess Aurora pricks her finger on a spindle after her 16th birthday, following a curse by the evil fairy Carabosse, she is bound to die. The Lilac Fairy manages to modify the curse, letting the beautiful Aurora fall into a 100-year slumber until waken up by the kiss of true love instead of dying. The Lilac Fairy leads Prince Desire to the castle, where he, enchanted by her beauty, kisses her, breaking the curse.
The only thing more beautiful than this stunning tale of love, kindness, and wonder is Tchaikovsky’s stunning music and the enchanting dancing that accompanies it in the classic ballet. It is the second of Tchaikovsky’s three iconic ballets, all part of the popular ballet repertoire around the world. With the original scenario by Ivan Vsevolozhsky and choreography by the iconic Marius Petipa, ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1890, instantly becoming a favorite.
The State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine is one of the most prestigious classical ballet institutions in Ukraine, regularly presenting all the timeless and beloved masterpieces of classical ballet – from Bournonville’s ‘La Sylphide’ to Adam’s ‘Giselle’, from Minkus’ ‘Don Quixote’ and ‘La Bayadère to Tchaikovsky’s ‘The Nutcracker’ and ‘Swan Lake’.
