Kansas has been a prolific force in the rock scene since 1973. The Topeka-born band, who named their group after their home state, has more than just dropped platinum-selling hits. Their presence in the music industry has created a legacy influencing the next generation of musicians. Renowned progressive rock bands, such as Dream Theater, Rush, Yes, Symphony X, and Queensryche, have cited Kansas as one of their main influences when writing music. In 1974, the band released their self-titled debut album. The record, later certified gold, entered the Billboard 200 and spawned the singles “Can I Tell You” and “Lonely Winds.”
The following year, the band dropped two studio albums, Song for America and Masque. Both records entered the Billboard 200 and were certified gold in the U.S. after selling over 500,000 copies each. It wasn’t until 1976 that Kansas made their first phenomenal breakthrough. Their fifth studio effort, Leftoverture soared to number 5 on the Billboard 200. The album also served as the band’s international breakthrough after entering the chart in Australia and Canada. Leftoverture featured the band’s most famous hit, “Carry On Wayward Son,” which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was later certified quadruple platinum. Meanwhile, Leftoverture sold over five million copies in the U.S., becoming Kansas’s best-selling effort.
In 1977, Kansas released another successful record, Point of Know Return. The album became the band’s highest charting effort after peaking at number 4 on the Billboard 200. The fifth studio release featured three incredible hits, “Dustin in the Wind,” “Portrait,” and the fan-favorite title track. Thanks to the album’s success, Kansas debuted in the charts of two more countries, France and the Netherlands. Meanwhile, “Dust in the Wind” entered the charts in France, Belgium, New Zealand, and more. Point of Know Return became Kansas’s second best-selling album, with over four million copies sold in the U.S.
Kansas released several more critically-acclaimed efforts, including their latest album, The Absence of Presence. The 2020 effort spawned three singles, “Throwing Mountains,” “Memories Down the Late,” and “Jets Overhead.” The album entered three Billboard charts and entered the charts in 12 countries.
