Can true love surpass all challenges? The young and handsome Prince Siegfried falls in love with the beautiful Princess Odette. However, the Princess and her friends were turned into swans. The evil Sorcerer Baron Von Rothbart, also in love with the princess, cast a curse that turned them into Swans. But at night, they turn back into their human form. This two-act ballet is perhaps one of the most famous ballet performances of all time, next to The Nutcracker. The original performance premiered in 1877 in St. Petersburg, Moscow. The show featured the libretto by original choreographer Julis Resinger. In 1985, the ballet was revived by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Swan Lake features the music of legendary Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
Over the years, Swan Lakes have had many revivals. Every spring, dance companies across the world perform their rendition of the ballet classic. For the World Ballet Series, their 2024 rendition will be choreographed by Nadezhda Kalinina. The performance is reportedly “loving retouched” based on Marius Petipa’s version. Attendees can look forward to a breathtaking visual and aural treat as Swan Lake is slated to feature over 150 hand-sewn costumes and hand-crafted sets. Meanwhile, the production also brought in award-winning SFX makeup artist Irina Strukova, who will turn the ballet dancers into ethereal swans.
For this performance, the World Ballet Series reportedly features a multi-national ensemble of dancers selected from Europe, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, and the U.K. The show will also feature principal dancer Andrew Lassakova, who will perform as Odile and Odette. The showcase will also present the fantastic talents of ballet virtuosos.
